Vivien is a designer based in Paris, France. His work is overloaded with fascinating flawed character designs and gorgeous handwritten typography. It’s difficult to put only one label on his portfolio, but I would say it’s somewhere between illustrator and graphic designer.
Vivien graduated from Beaux Arts France and it’s clearly visible how much the university has helped him hone on technique. Vivien has a strong command of typography and his work reflects the dedication he has to form when it comes to letter design.
His Egg font has made several designers clamoring for a way to download it. I love fonts that have a few sharp angles and lend well to a calligraphy style.
Vivien is a designer that inspires you with his elegant hand lettered logotypes that are as original as they are diverse! He is a graphic designer at Caribara and a graphic designer at the FADA webzine, so he’s particularly skilled at balancing layouts with images and typography.
Here’s a few of my favorite pieces:
No shame in character design
It’s obvious to see that Vivien is cares little of portraying beautiful characters. His designs are realistic with pot bellies, red faces, bulbous noses, and more.
What we can take away from his designs is every character doesn’t need to have the perfect silhouette and flattering clothes – and that it can be fun to have characteristics that are unattractive and caricaturized.
You won’t find a hint of the gorgeous Disney princesses in his portfolio! Realistic flaws are all over his designs.
If you’re interested to see how his sketches progress from the line outline to the fully-colored illustration, check out his video of his process.
