Your Clients Send You This Kind of Note:

“Dear Mary,

We are excited to let you know that your design has been selected from among 200 design concepts. We’re happy to inform you that we are honored to have a talented designer like you work on our project.

We love your original and out of the box design. But we just have a few suggestions, not amendment per se, to make our logo feel more personal to our brand. We hope you understand.

Here’s a video we’ve prepared to make it easier for you to follow the instructions.

Thank you so much in advance.

Sincerely,

Smug Client”

You Create Designs Because:

It’s relaxing, like a walk on a southern California beach. It’s like having a hobby – photography, gardening, killing clients etc.

You are on top of the world; flying high over the moon, in a futuristic, carbon driven, atomic powered rocket ship 5,000, when you can see the logo you’ve created is on a store sign.

You Started Designing When:

You were frustrated with having to rely on someone to create small art work when you could recreate your own.

After all, you own a small sticker/label shop; you should be able to create artwork for free just to get the label order. During that time, you learned different techniques to please the customer, and life got a little easier. Hail to woman-power! You are proud of being a self-taught Corel Draw user from the day it was first released.

Your Biggest Challenge Is:

Enjoying a comedy movie late at night with popcorns in your lap and replying to a client who has no idea what to do with their logo design brief, let alone conveying it effectively to you to create one.  The movie combo doesn’t happen every day of course but it happens.

While most of the time, you struggle with clients who will choose logo designs which they think are “out of the box” when in actuality they are either overly-used designs or absolute nothing to do with their business.

Shoot them! Let’s enjoy the popcorn.

Your Inspiration Comes from:

Helvita Retro. Comic Retro. San Retro.

Yes, you love retro. You adore the vintage gas station signs, brewery, post-war type of retro designing. You aspire to get onto the bandwagon of retro designer. You could use some improvement in this area but what the hell. In the meanwhile, you will be the retro renegade and create fabulous retro designs.

Your Designing Success Comes From:

Having a good laugh with buddy designers at a comically designed logo or illustration.

But more from competing with designers on a crowdsourcing platform like ZillionDesigns.com, that offers tons of projects to participate in; competing with talented designers; and working with a supportive management team to create fabulous designs that will blow every one away.

Your Advice for a Successful Design Project is:

“Enter one design that follows the brief and enter another one that is out of the box.”

That’s me!

Mary
