Creative Brief

A very British illustrative logo for a photography company.

BREATHE PICTURES

Yes

A few months ago, I commissioned a logo for myself as a photographer, and selected a signature style.

You can see it on www.breathepictures.com. I now need something NEW for the main company; Breathe Pictures.

I want to tap into the British-ness of my company more. Being proud to be British and our flag; the Union Jack. So, I'm looking for a showstopping iconic illustrative logo.

The PERFECT example of this is the HARLEY-DAVIDSON logo. I love the way they use a strong block running through the shield. Have a look at their design. I’m imagining the shield behind being something very British, almost a MODERN coat of arms, or a shield of sorts - using the Union Jack.

I don’t simply want to copy their logo, far from it, I just would like that to be a starting base for my thought process.

This symbol needs to incorporate the Union Jack flag, sylistically and in it's colours. It's important that my current branding can fit into this or work alongside it - that's a tricky call I know.

Please DO NOT copy the signature I currently have, it's great and shouldn't be part of this iconic logo.

In that the Union Jack is red white and blue, I’m imaging this will feature heavily. But I’m open to interpretations of our flag.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE FOR ALL DESIGNERS We've had to extend this contest by five days, due to my favourite logo so far being a little to similar to another one elsewhere in the world. I'm working with the designer to see if we can make some subtle changes, but this does OPEN IT RIGHT UP, for new designers to show me what they can do. So, please please please, would be great to see some fresh designs. Don't just think circle and aperture. I'm sure you can see I very much like Spidermoon's designs entered, but I'd like to see some original ideas. Avoid being too cliche - stay well clear of landmarks like Big Ben etc. With the flag, I like darker colours, they look more expensive. Do not do bright red white and blues. ALSO, look at the sweeping effects of the Eurovision Song Contest. http://www.eurovision.tv/page/dusseldorf-2011 We like for instance the heart that has the light torch effect. Perhaps you can gain some inspiration here, but I do need to keep a flag somewhere within. The Union Jack. Good luck designers. I am away for a couple of days, so I will be watching the designs as they build. Will comment where I can to designers. Kindest, Neale

dear PH, I hope my design # 283 - # 289 to give you another option in addition to aperture, while the design of my first take is the icon hart, but have you eliminated.

I'm loving the circular designs guys, but it appears that we're close to another company's design, so I need to think of something else that could go with the aperture ring is? Love the placement of the Union Jack and the subtle nature of this design, but something else instead of the aperture?

Hi guys, again, don't just copy the design Spidermoon has done, please create your own concepts. It's good to see what YOU can do, not what you can make of someone else's concept. Cheers guys.

Designers, please don't copy someone else's design, 218 is just a copy of 172? Really keen to see what ideas YOU have?

Hi Spidermoon, sorry I'm not sure you got me on that last one... Can you use the text from #155 and place around #168 please...

Hi Spidermoon... can you try putting the text size you use in #155 around the darker flag used in #118. I want to keep #155 as well, since that is my favourite so far. Neale

Hi designers, take another look at the brief - I've uploaded an old logo we used to use. I think we've come as far as we can come with the circular concept and for me, spidermoon's designs really are terrific. So, as a final mixing pot idea, see what you can do with the uploaded file I have just popped up in the design brief area. Kindest, Neale

#133 Spidermoon, spot on with the lettering I think... can you keep to the darker colour scheme you had in 118. Try a version of #133 with various lettering tones of grey, lighter perhaps. Also can you try a smaller font, it will mean you have more spacing between letters, but I'd like to see how it works. Getting there!

#113 Christina, like your thoughts, but the other half aperture ring that spidermoon has wins over on this one, it's more subtle to my eye. Feel free to come up with a different concept, say a stamp, or some kind of seal, a wax seal... something that departs from the circle, people seem to be jumping on that...

Witter - thanks for your designs, I want to keep it real simple, and #114 is not quite compact enough.

Hi guys, got some messages with regard to whether the contest is still open, as I've eliminated a fair few. The answer is definately yes. I'm certainly loving what I see from one particular designer, but it doesn't stop you coming up with different ideas. Cheers guys, some fabulous work!

#99 is fabulous Spidermoon. Can you darken the blues, I want to make the colouring slightly more subtle, and a touch darker than our actual flag colours. Also the text around the outside, can you have the same letter spacing for NEALE JAMES and BREATHE PICTURES, it would be good to see if with a touch more spacing the words could actually flow around the whole circle?

#80 is the closest yet we feel, as it encompasses the flag alongside an aperture, very photography. Your thinking process is great. Can you give it the kind of 3D button treatment I see for example in #75? Also can you wrap the BREATHE PICTURES around the bottom of the circle, in a simple pro font, look at what's used on my website www.breathepictures.com at the moment. It would be quite cool to see NEALE JAMES wrapped around the top too, so the two words form a circle around the logo? Neale

Hi designers, really appreciate your input. I know I am eliminating as we go, just so that I can see the wood for the trees. Think subtle. Have a look at http://www.duwayne.co.za/weddings/ This guy's logo is subtle, understated, expensive looking. Think along these lines as you go.
