Create elegant logo for community organization

Lincoln Central

The Heart of the Neighborhood

Yes

Lincoln Central Association is a neighborhood non profit organization. Lincoln Central refers to a specific geographic area in the Lincoln Park neighborhood of Chicago. Among the defining characteristics of the Lincoln Central neighborhood are its parks. The largest of these parks is Oz Park, named for the classic children’s book and movie, The Wizard of Oz. The park contains giant sculptures of four of the main characters of the story, the Tin Man, the Scarecrow, the Cowardly Lion and Dorothy and her small terrier Toto. The park also includes several “yellow brick road” paths. Links to more information about O Park are included below.

From a design standpoint, the logo should include heart imagery, preferably somewhat abstract there are natural ties between our heart theme and Oz, i.e., the Tin Man and we believe the yellow brick roads could be an interesting element. One option is a yellow brick road leading to a stylized heart shape. One of the attachments is a logo for a nearby home known as Over Oz. We love the elegance of that logo and are hoping for similar elegance.

Emerald green. Gold/yellow. Elements of red possible. Use your imagination but emerald green probably need to be a central element

The premise from which the branding committee has been working is that Lincoln Central's name itself means something. In fact, it means two things: First, Central has a geographic meaning in terms of our location within Lincoln Park. Much more importantly, it also means we are "Central" to those activities in the neighborhood that are authorized by LCA's mission statement. From that premise, we sought to find an appropriate metaphor that is consistent with our mission statement, easy to visualize, understand and remember, and easy to build upon creatively and symbolically.

The committee originally intended to come forward with three different themes and show various executions of each to gauge the Board's reaction as to its preference. As we went through the process of trying to best translate our mission statement, etc., into a theme and tag line, however, we kept ending up at the same place. As a result, we are presenting only one theme—but many variations on how it could be creatively executed. One theme the committee did carefully consider before deciding on our recommendation was "Lincoln Central—The voice of the neighborhood" (and several variations thereof). We ruled that theme out pretty quickly for two reasons. First Alderman Smith uses something similar in both the title of her newsletter and in her constituent email address. The committee believes it is important that Lincoln Central have its own unique positioning. Secondly, the committee believes "voice" does not adequately reflect LCA's mission statement. Lincoln Central is much more than just a voice. We live. We listen. We think. We plan. We decide. We work. We contribute. We speak. We take a stand.

And, why does Lincoln Central do all those things? Because we care! Therefore, the Committee recommends as our "Central" branding theme:

LINCOLN CENTRAL
the heart of the neighborhood

In addition to being both at the geographic and figurative center, heart has a tie to existing LCA brand components, i.e., the Tin Man. Also, there is the "home is where the heart is" symbolism. There are very interesting ways to creatively and abstractly render a heart that are easy to tie into the neighborhood. We have attached several examples of how a logo can be executed.

#'s 26-28 show creative designs for abstract heart and other nice touches. Don't especially like the fonts. Also avoid italics. Much prefer the cleaner look of #27 vs #28. #26 would probably be better without the globe. it really doesn't tie into our branding theme of local neighborhood. Generally speaking, prefer that the text not be curved.

#24. Conceptually interesting but do not like specific execution. Don't like font selection. Comments elsewhere should provide guidance on that. The trees look like pine or cedar which are not in our neighborhood. Lacks heart imagery.

#'s 22 & 23. Don't like font selection. We do not want Abraham Lincoln in logo. Lacks emerald green. Interesting use of heart in place of O in #23 but, again, no Abraham Lincoln.

#'s 19 & 20. The greens aren't or don't appear to be emerald. #20 lack's tagline. Neither contains any heart imagery. There are merely derivative of the Over Oz logo.

#14-#19......all very elegant and classy. Love fonts and crispness of designs. They lack emerald green, though. Have been against the use of initials LC but these are executed well in the places they are used. Interesting use of bricks in #17.

#'s 13 & 25. Looks too old school. Too much like an emblem. Not classy and elegant. Interesting use of yellow brick road. Heart needs to be abstract.

#13. Interesting concept with possibilities. Do not like font.....want something more classy and elegant. Clever use of heart and tree combo...don't especially like that particular image but directionally it is interesting.

#9, #10, #11. Very elegant but are just derivative of the Over Oz logo. These don't contain any heart imagery. They don't have the tagline. Font is great and a clean, classy look. But, again, just derivative of Over Oz.

#6 is creative but lacks tagline which is a absolute requirement. Hearts look too much like bow tie.

Re draft #4. We no don't want the initials LCA included. Do not like the font selected for Lincoln Central. I like the inclusion of bricks but do not believe that the execution is elegant enough.
