Creative Brief

Solar Power Development

Renewable Energy Associates (REA)

No

We are a young company that handles all aspects of the development of large-scale solar power systems--from finding and funding, all the way to installation and commissioning. We are not residential developers. We focus on building large arrays for utilities, or commercial and industrial applications.

While we may be green, green and orange are overused colors in our industry. Please use green only as a highlight if necessary, and please do not use orange. Our preferred palette consists mainly of light blues, browns, and gray-scale, and can be seen on the prototype of our website here: www.wix.com/ninecwrath/rea1. Our logo colors do not have to be from that palette, but they do need to at least look good in combination with our existing website. Additionally, it would be ideal to have a logo that looks good in both polychrome and monochrome.

not sure

As you can see from the repeated picture on our website (www.wix.com/ninecwrath/rea1), we very much like the concept of a sunflower in a light bulb. If you could combine a stylized version of that image with the letters REA (or Renewable Energy Associates written out), that would be an excellent starting point. We are quite open to other ideas however, so if any of you feel strongly about one image or another, feel free to explore. I know we have a corporate audience, but at heart, we're the good guys, so please have a little fun with it and I'm sure something positive will come from your efforts. Thanks very much.

We'd like to thank all the designers that put so much effort into our project, particularly WillDesigns, Ameenl, Insignia001, DesignFlu, and Uzumaki. You've all done a great job with a difficult assignment and come up with some wonderful designs. Our task of sorting through the designs and picking the best one won't be easy (there are so many we like), but we are currently in discussions and will pick a winning design within a day or two. Thank you all again for your hard work, and best of luck to all of you on your future projects.

Uzumaki, your revisions are fantastic! Thank you for the color change, the text changes, and especially thank you for giving us so many different looks from which we can choose. These versions are especially helpful for us in helping you take your next and final step to a five star, perfect design. What we would like you to do, and if done correctly this will be the last revision we ask of you, is to combine elements of #41 and #52 into one final design. We love the change in orientation of your two leaves in #52. We also love what you colored blue and what you colored green in #52. However, we prefer the shading, text, and sizing of #41. As such, we would like to see a design that has the rotated two-color leaf design in #52 but with exactly the same text as #41. We want the same size REA, the same color blue, the same shading, the same gray underline, and the same gray secondary text as #41. We also want the shading of the graphic itself to be the same as it was in #41. In your most recent drafts, you went with the sunburst shading, which looked good on the one leaf design, but which we don't like as much on the two leaf designs. Go back to the simpler, smoother shading you used in #41, and make sure the color of the blue in the design stays the same rich shade it was in #41, as opposed to becoming the slightly washed out and electric blue of your most recent designs. Ideally, this will make for a richer shade of blue and green with smoother shading that matches the color and shading of the REA text. Finally, go back to the same shading and color of the light bulb base that you used in #41. So the base should be gray, with shading that is lighter in the middle and darker towards the left and right edges, giving the base an appealing three dimensional quality. Also, I'm not sure if you made the graphic smaller relative to the text in your most recent designs or if that's a trick from the different typeface, but if you did make the graphic smaller, go back to the slightly larger graphic. Keep the relative sizing of the graphic and text the same as it was in #41. I know this seems a long list, but you already have all the elements we're asking for, so hopefully it won't take you much time to put them all together in the same design. If you make all these changes, your final design will be just perfect for us, easily five stars. Thank you so much for all the effort you've put into this project. We cannot wait to see your final draft!

Thank you for the new drafts, DesignFlu! We cannot think of a way to improve on #56, which is our favorite of your four revisions. Your design will be given very serious consideration when we are picking the winner of the contest. If it isn't too much trouble, we'd probably appreciate you adding a smaller flat black or gray single color version of your design to the bottom of #56. See #6 for an example of what we mean. There will likely be times where we can only use one color, and it would be useful for us to have a visual of how it look. Thank you again, and congratulations for your superb work.

Man, Uzumaki. The previous comment was written before you had posted #44. Truth be told, we like #44 just as much as #41 and #42. You've done lots of great work here. I would say, if you have the time, try the same thing on #44 as suggested on the other two. Work a little blue into the leaf. It'll go well with the sun shading. Also try a version without the large REA, and instead just have "Renewable Energy Resources" written out. Thanks so much again. We like all of these designs quite a lot, and we look forward to seeing the small changes soon. If we were spoiled for choice before even seeing #44, we're really spoiled for choice now. Good stuff.

#41 and #42, those are really amazing, Uzumaki. We like them both quite a lot. They're well designed, well shaded, and nice and abstract without losing the idea behind the original image. Great work! Two things: We'd be really interested to see one where you combine the blue and green into one ball. We like the blue, and we like the green, but I think we'd like them even more if they were used together in the same graphic. I would keep more blue than green, but if you want to split one leaf blue and one leaf green, that'd be fine. We'll trust you on whichever way you think looks best. We'd also really like to see two versions of the split color design. We'd like one version with the large REA that you have now, so you can just keep the text the same. And we'd like another version without the large REA, with just "Renewable Energy Associates" written out like in your previous designs. We are very much undecided which way we'd like the text, so it'd help us a lot to see both ways. Try to pick a clean typeface that matches the modern look of your new graphic. Other than that, really you've done an excellent job, and we're looking forward to seeing just those minor tweaks made to the design. Thanks so much! We're getting spoiled for choice now.

#27, DesignFlu, thank you for submitting another draft! We can't overstate how much we love your design. It's simple, subtle, and beautiful all at the same time; and the more we look at it, the more we like it. The shading is now excellent as well. Thank you for adding some, and thank you for the color change. The design is so beautiful though, that we think the logo loses something with the large REA letters. The large REA distracts the eye from the truly wonderful graphic. If you could keep the shading, and the blue, but go back to the original smaller text that you had in #15, with "Renewable Energy Associates" written out, we think the design would be nearly perfect. To make the design truly perfect, you could try working in just a small amount of dark green into the leaves. Try the left half of the left leaf, or even just the bottom left part of the left leaf, before transitioning smoothly to the beautiful blue. I think we'd also like to see the base of the light bulb and the small "Associates" in both the gray used in #27, and the brown used in #15. We're not sure which we like better. If you wanted to get really fancy, you could try one where you transition the base of the light bulb from brown to gray, the brown being below the green, and the gray being below the blue. That way we end up with an interesting, subtle color shift from the earthy green/brown to the corporate blue/gray. Hopefully these are easy changes for you to make, and if you can make them all, we're looking at a design that would be absolutely perfect for us. Thanks so much. We hope to see your new drafts soon. Excellent work!

We like the new design, #24. We're happy you've submitted another one. The different shape of REA is quite interesting, and we really like where you put the light bulb. That's a more difficult and thoughtful negative space to find, and because it's a more creative space, we feel the logo is more pleasing to the viewer. Nice work. The letters do look a bit stretched out though. If I had to guess, I'd say you were trying to make the logo more cohesive with the text by making their edges line up. This is an excellent line of thinking, but I feel you're sacrificing too much aesthetically. Perhaps try a version where you cut down on the length of the letters in REA without reducing their height. The edges won't all line up, but you will eliminate the stretched effect. To unify the text with the logo, my best suggestion would be to extend the shading principles that so beautifully govern REA into the lower text as well. So instead of a horizontal gradient on "Renewable Energy" and a vertical gradient on "Associates", the result would be both lines of text grow darker at the extreme left and right, while also probably growing slightly darker towards the bottom. If this ends up not looking right to you, you're welcome to try something else. But my hope is that if all the elements of the design are influenced by the same shading and light source, you'll be able to pull all those elements together nicely without making them the same size. Please message me if you're at all hesitant or confused about what I'm saying. I am more than happy to talk to you in more depth or to clarify as needed. You're doing excellent work, and if you can make these changes, I think we'd all be excited to see the result. Thanks very much!

Designers, please remember that we do not want green to be used as the primary color of your designs. We realize we said green many times in the brief, but we were using "green" to mean environmentally friendly, not green as in the color green. Also please remember not to neglect negative space in your designs. While not a requirement, any creative use of negative space will be observed and appreciated. Thanks, and keep them coming!

Thanks all for your most recent submissions! Shinythingsinc, you've incorporated many elements that we like in #17 and #18 (the leaf, the lightbulb, etc) but they aren't working as well together as we think they could be. We're going for a simpler, streamlined, more cohesive design that still expresses our key ideas. Ameenl, #19 and #21, I really respect your attempt to use a CFL light bulb in your design. It makes me happy to see an environmentally friendly bulb. Unfortunately, I don't think the shape of a CFL bulb translates very well into logo form. CFLs are simply too visually confusing to be used in a corporate logo unless they are heavily abstracted, at which point the image would probably lose its meaning anyway. #22, that's a pretty representation of a sunflower in a light bulb, but we're going for an image that is more abstracted. Thanks again for the submissions. Many of you are really onto something good. We look forward to seeing even more!

That's nice and clean, #15, we like where you're starting. There's too much green though. Please change the "Renewable Energy" and maybe one of the leaves to a combination of blues or gray/brown. Also please add a light source to it (shading/gradient) to give the design and text some depth and make them pop from the page a little more. See #6 for an example of shading that we like. Try a couple with different typefaces as well, just to see how it goes. Great first submission. We hope to see more from you soon!

It needs to be simpler, slicker, and more abstract, #12. I realize when dealing with flowers, the temptation is to go for a pastoral look, as a few of you have done. That is not what we want. We need the logo to be modern, simple, clean lines, and abstract. Try to give the impression of a flower without actually drawing every petal.

Thanks for joining the project, #11. The logos you've designed that we like are your Expectise logo, your Eco Solutions logo, and your most recent Resect logo. Try to think along those lines: clean, simple, corporate, modern, but interesting. You might be on to something with your first attempt, but we really can't say because right now it's too homely, not modern enough. Remember to stay away from green and orange as main colors. Go ahead and work more with blues and gray scale. We're looking forward to see more designs from you as you get a better idea what we're looking for.

#10 Thanks for the redesign. We'd like to see you change the main colors of your work from green to blues and grays or browns, with green used only as a highlight. You also may have lost something in your design by going back to the standard flower inside a light bulb. We thought your first attempt, where the light bulb was growing out of a flower stalk was quite interesting. We also think there's too much division between the logo and the text. The two should be more cohesive if possible. So let's see you go back to your original flower idea, change the colors, and try to unify your flower stalk with the text so the logo functions more as one unit. Thanks though. You're getting closer to what we're looking for, and we're excited to see more attempts from you.

#6, we love the color change, particularly the shading on the REA. Instead of a simple gradient, the shading gives the impression of the sun, which is excellent. You've now got all the elements we're looking for, and you're working with the right colors. This is a great foundation. Please continue tweaking your design, trying different typefaces and different looks on the REA and the light bulb. I'm not sure the design could be much cleaner, but I do think you could make it all more modern and more interesting to look at. I wish I could be more specific, but there's a reason I'm not a graphic designer. You've got all the principles down, so just stick within those principles and have fun with it. I'll continue giving you feedback as you go along. Fantastic start.

We like that quite a bit, #5. You've made good use of negative space and worked in the light bulb image at the same time. We'd like to see all the letters, both REA and "Associates," in a light blue instead of green. Keep the stalk and leaves inside the light bulb green, but let's try a darker forest green instead of the bright green you have currently. I'm pleased. The last two designs have been great. Keep them coming!

Thanks for you submission, Uzumaki. #4 is much closer to what we're looking for than the others so far, and it's a great starting point for the rest of the designs. Remember, we want clean, simple, slick, but modern and interesting to look at. Uzumaki, I like the general idea of yours, and I like your take on having the sunflower head be the light bulb. I would try to make it a little less busy though. You could ditch the circle around the flower, and put the flower to the left of the text instead of above the text. You could also try to integrate the flower with the text a little bit, making it more cohesive. I'm also not sure about having a solar panel inside the bulb. I think it's really interesting, but it's also hard to recognize. I would go for a simpler design inside the bulb. Thanks again for your submission though. We're anxious to see more along those lines. Also, designers, please remember that we want green used only as an accent or highlight color, and we don't want orange used at all. Please work more with shades of blue or gray, or colors besides green and orange that look good with light blue and gray. Thanks.

Thanks for the submissions, Willdesigns. We'd like to see a few different designs before really focusing our feedback, but I will say that we prefer the typeface on #2 over the typeface on #1. Your composition of "Renewable Energy Associates" was an apt way of handling what we know is a long name. We like the focus on Renewable Energy with Associates smaller and underneath. We would like, however, some sort of illustrative or abstract logo to go along with the text, unless the text makes very interesting use of negative space. Also, I know colors can be changed easily, but let's try to stay away from rasta colors. We are very anxious to see at least a few attempts at using a stylized or abstracted version of our sunflower in a light bulb picture. I will upload the picture later today to make it easier for you guys. Thanks again, and happy designing!
