Ever wondered why you always slow down your car when you see that octagonal stop sign on the roadside? Or why you always search for a red cross on the street when you are in need of medical supply or service? We do it unconsciously all the time, but rarely realize the roles symbols play in communicating to us.

In the field of graphic design, it’s a practice, a conscious effort to use symbols in creative works to denote, convey, and/or even shout out to the target audience what graphic designers want to say to them. The effective use of symbols can only be gauged by how receptive the audience is towards the symbol, but more importantly, they understand its context in its truest essence. The key is to understand symbolism as pervasive, overriding all borders and cultures, yet at the same time have localized representations in different regions of the world.

This is important because if you are graphic designer working for a client, whose audience resides in a different part of the world, then you must know about symbolism in graphic design and you should also know how to choose symbols wisely for your design work to communicate the message the client wants to convey to his/her target audience.

The purpose of this whitepaper is to show graphic designers how symbols are essentially important in visual presentations that make design attractive, and how they should be chosen carefully to be used in creative work to convey effective messages in the right context and connotation.

Have you ever accidentally used a symbol which conveyed the wrong message? Share away!
