The company publishes magazines for area fire departments. The magazines consist of communications from the division, training, fitness, photos, articles, etc.
I would like a subtle fire department influence in the design, but not overwhelming!

Fire departments of course have a lot of red - but this isn't necessarily needed.

I'm on the fence about including a piece of the fire department maltese cross into the logo - for sure not in its entirety but, maybe a section of it. If not that, maybe a tool such as an ax or pike pole (New York hook).
Including either one of these two ideas is not a requirement - I had another designer come up with a logo using both ideas and they looked bad. So, it might not work!
