Creative Brief

The Human Drummer

Thoughts on the Life Percussive

This is a revised e-book edition of a didactic memoir that has earned praise from major recording artists, symphonic musicians, and music-industry leaders. The book contains musical and social commentary; advice; interviews; memories of America, Europe, and the Middle East; and reference material.

Music

Drummers and other musicians, students, parents, baby boomers, and anyone else who enjoys musical stories, tips, and information.

The author is primarily a drum-set player and timpanist. Any image of a drum set should feature Ludwig drums and Paiste cymbals (preferably from the 1960s); no other brands are acceptable. (Visit these companies' Web sites and vintageludwigdrums.com for ideas.) Photos of 18th-century timpani (kettledrums) are equally appropriate. A photomontage will work, provided it is uncluttered and will reproduce well online (Amazon, iBooks, Barnes & Noble, et al.).

Designers, thank you for your thoughtful work. So far my favorite design is #8; I have sent a private message to the designer. I like designs #5 and #6 as well, but they are very similar to the cover I used for the 1st edition of the book (see Amazon.com). I would like to see how you might incorporate some of the other images I submitted, perhaps as a photomontage (without clutter). We are off to a good start! All the best, Hal Howland
