Branding

A Fontastic Story

I bet you’ve never thought your life as a graphic designer anything near adventurous or exciting. Well that’s where you are wrong! “The world is a canvas to the imagination” (Henry David Thoreau) and I say – whether you are a designer, UI/UX developer or web designer, you can alter the reality and make it as interesting as you like, or as dull as dishwater.

Whether you choose to make your illustrations lively with dancing aliens; talk in emojis; or label your life in holographic typography, you can make your work come alive.

Take fonts for instance, how many time while designing a logo, have you thought a font is too bold, soft, loud or simply boring for this brand? Fonts speak and they speak louder than words, pun intended. They do so through your creative sense and how you perceive they will speak to the audience. If you look at the different brand identities of the world, you will find that each is unique because fonts have given them a language to communicate, and an attitude to carry themselves in the fantastic world of brands. Major brands like Samsung seem to say “I am the future” while Android screams “Droid! Droid! Droid coming up”.

In fact, in some cases however simple a design like a logotype with a sophisticated font choice can make all the difference. For example the coveted YSL emblem, Chanel’s CC and LV abbreviation speak of elegance, luxury and class without having to scream “Ooh la la!”

To sum up, fonts in visual graphics can change emotions if we use it to express our messages strategically and can even perk up an ordinary product. Your brand takes on a personality, when an appropriate font is adopted for it.

So in the spirit of fonts and their appreciation, I would say fonts can either save or kill your design. To demonstrate I’ve borrowed this video from the CollegeHumor.com people, and want to show that a world with font is fun and adventurous. In this video, watch how some of the notorious fonts have gathered to show their power, how they speak and see who saves the day!
