Flag Day – Honoring the Star-Spangled Banner

June 14th is Flag Day, a time for honoring Old Glory and the phenomenon of this American icon. No other country in the world has such easy accessibility to buy their flags while in America you can buy one in almost any store.

The American flag has gone through many design changes since this country was founded, and the flag is packed with meaning, like any well-designed icon should be.

President George Washington described the flag’s design like this: “We take the stars from heaven, the red from our mother country, separating it by white stripes, thus showing that we have separated from her, and the white stripes shall go down to posterity representing liberty.”

Flag Day, though not a federal holiday, is full of tradition. The holiday was established in 1916 by President Woodrow Wilson, and in 1949 Congress declared June 14 a national holiday. But why did a day develop that was dedicated to just our country’s flag?

This infographic shows you how the star-spangled banner started, how Flag Day developed, and a few interesting statistics about the American flag.
