#WinningWednesday: This Animator’s Style Evolution is Inspiring!

You don’t need to struggle in life to become a brilliant artist, but the most amazing perseverance can be found in those artists that stay dedicated to their dreams. Steven Chitty is turning 24 years old this week and he’s already worked on an award-winning short film.

He has faced many ups and downs in the last two years, but this young artist has finally started the animation production studio of his dreams.

“Around here, however, we don’t look backwards for very long. We keep moving forward, opening up new doors and doing new things, because we’re curious…and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.”― Walt Disney Company

Steven found his passion to animate back in high school and when a friend gave him a flash animation program for his birthday, Steven found what he wanted to do with the rest of his life. He wanted to be an animator!

On Tumblr, he’s known primarily for his small flash animation projects and Monster Hunter fanart. His animation style is unique and eye catching, and when he decided to buckle down and begin working towards a professional career, he was contacted to work with the director of the film Fat Chance. Steven’s dream is coming true and he couldn’t be happier.

“My first true animation was under Deviant Pictures “Fat Chance” where I was contracted to create an animated opening in less than 3 months time. I worked long hours to make a frame-by-frame opening.”

Unfortunately, the Fat Chance opening is under contract that he couldn’tshare it, but most likely the animation looked a little like this:

“It was taxing, but the effort paid off. Now I have connections to the horror industry that I would have never had if I never took that chance to begin with.”

In the beginning of November, he started an Indigogo campaign to fund Sketches, his first fully-realized cartoon series.

Sketches is a cartoon series following the main female protagonist Alice Royalguard and her friends in their everyday lives as cartoons. The series will be in the same vein as animated works in the 90’s that kids watched on Saturday morning.

“My biggest challenge is trying to bring traditional lessons to a digital format and continuing to learn as I move forward. Animation is a slow process, but there are many aspects that people don’t consider when creating a believable animated work such as pacing, timing, and mouth movements. ”

Like most cartoon shows, the series went through a few different character concepts before the art was finalized for the campaign. Most animators and designers go through a long process to discover their own style. It’s fascinating when designers choose to share their work on social media as you get a glimpse into their creative process and watch as their style changes over the course of several months.

“The biggest blocks I have come across were trying to change my old style to a cartoony look. It’s been extremely hard to break away from the “anime” look and obtain more of a western style. “

Steven has a mission to bring a smile to people’s faces with his new cartoon. If he does that, Steven feels that he’s one step closer to the fantastic animators of the past like Walt Disney.

Seeing young artists starting on the path to their dreams certainly inspires me to work harder to meet my own dreams head-on! I wish him the best of luck with his new series.

Go back and look at your old portfolio. Has as your style has changed or has it stayed relatively the same over the years?
