The colours must stand out on both a light and dark grey background. I think purples and blues look good for DNA based logos.

Many family history logos centre on a tree, leaves, roots, or some sort of genetic symbol such as a DNA strand. My preference is split between a tree and a DNA strand. It would be a bonus to think of something truly unique but any of those two is great.
The logo must be suitable for use as the program icon so it must fit in a square and have no text. Logo text would be incorporated by adding it to the right of the logo part of the design. We also require a transparent background and a design which looks good from the Windows desktop, start menu etc.
The above is guidance so you have plenty to go on but the message is be as creative and novel as possible.
