FourYears business logo for startup college website

FourYears

Looking to have someone design a logo for my startup company

Yes

This is for my startup company, FourYears. This website will serve as a resource for college students. To begin, it will be a site where students at a university can easily buy/sell textbooks (a textbook exchange) from/to other students on that campus. Students will easily be able to see what other students on their campus have the book they need or need the book they have.

It will also include a large off-campus housing section where students can quickly and easily see their housing options.

It will include professor reviews and ratings, class reviews and ratings, information about Greek life on campus, dining hall information, and anything else that students need/eventually just learn on their own throughout college.

It will connect local business owners and students through the use of SMS deal offerings. When a student is in class from 10-12 in the morning, they may get a text around 11:45 offering them some deal at a burrito joint just down the street from where they are at that moment.

It will allow all the students within one class to access a "class page" that will connect the students. This will allow for file sharing, posting messages, asking questions, etc. Everyone in the class will automatically have access to the page.

Contact me if you need to learn more before designing the logo.

Abstract

I'm very open to different color ideas. I want it to stand out and grab your eye. I don't want it to be boring or dull. Bright, vibrant colors can be good as long as it's not gaudy. I like the colors this site uses: http://bit.ly/26DXTF Font-wise, I like Sans Serif, Retro, and Handwritten. I like this logo and this is the font I think I like the best: http://bit.ly/imGDYv I am open to seeing other fonts, though.

not sure

Please email me - ryanzverner@gmail.com - if you would like to see more examples of logos that I like.

I really like when a logo is really creative like - http://bit.ly/hmMDPt - where the "buildings" are "film strips" and they use a lot of color.

This is another creative logo that I really like: http://bit.ly/dMs5ji and I like this: http://bit.ly/gDUcOm as well.

On this page - http://bit.ly/2S2rUy - I like the zipliner logo, the eden logo, the farmdog logo, the adventureconstruct logo, and the K12 Reader logo.

I like this logo: http://bit.ly/ldX4ML and this one: http://bit.ly/jAtz06 and this one: http://bit.ly/jM1gh7

Here's another clever one that was interesting: http://bit.ly/ivHskY

I like the idea of using all-caps or, if it's all-lowercase then I'd like something to separate the words "four" and "years" such as having one bold and one regular or having them each a different color.

Tomorrow morning I am going to clean up the star ratings so you all have a clear idea of what designs I like the best. I just want everyone to understand exactly what I like and don't like so that there is no confusion. 5-STARS 6 designs will be given 5-star ratings. This DOES NOT mean these designs are perfect or that they are going to win. It just means that these are my 6 FAVORITE designs at this point. They aren't perfect, they are just my favorite of the ones I've seen here. You could come along and submit one that is TOTALLY different from my 6 favorite and I might love it. It just depends. 4-STARS 12 designs will be given 4-star ratings. These are in the next echelon and have lots of promise. I just simply don't like them QUITE as much as the 5-star designs. 3-STARS 30 designs will be given 3-star ratings. 2-STARS and 1-STARS The rest of the designs will be given 2-star and 1-star ratings. These designs are lacking in my opinion and just don't display the look I am hoping to find. Thanks everyone!

Thanks to everyone who has spent time revising their logos and coming up with some really cool, eye-catching, imaginative logos! You can see my taste based on the logos I posted and the logos I have liked above. This is another site that I just found that had some interesting designs: http://siahdesign.com/portfolio Keep up the great work!

As I said, it was just my opinion. And there is no need to get personal. There is no such thing as a bad design. It's all perspective.

bluegenel and azerty123, There has been no problem at all. I've received nearly 350 designs, there are plenty that I really like, and I think at least four of these designers are getting really close. The reason I'm paying $775 is to get creative ideas. The one common theme I have seen on every single project on here is that inevitably someone complains when their designs are rejected. Yet, for a half dozen of these designers, they keep trying to think creatively and have come up with some really cool, imaginative designs. There are plenty of ways to go with this logo. I've said a hundred times that you can take two approaches, one with some sort of significance (as someone did by showing four arrows to indicate movement through the four years) and one that is just aesthetically pleasing and might have less actual significance. If I wanted a logo that looked like #35 I would have contacted the local elementary school.

Agreed with BlueGenel. The logos you listed as examples are not made following a brief. They are proposed on websites like branstack that sells logo designers imagine. So of course, they imagine the name that goes with it, and that's how you end up with "clever" logos, they don't come from a brief. Also, as Blue stated, those are easy things to represent, "four" and "years" isn't. It might also help to guarantee your contest, as we almost always end up working for nothing, the client only walking away with a handful of stolen ideas.

The problem is that the first few of the logos from your brief are rain, dog, and fruit. These are all easy to find an expressive image for. Four and Years are not. Just my opinion. Blue

UPDATE Something I have struggled with through the logo design process is how to express the idea of college. And there's books, notes, professors, classes, dorms, fraternities and sororities, etc. But it was hard to think of just ONE image that could really convey all of that, something that could explain the four years you spend in college. Now seeing a few of these newer designs, I really like the idea of four arrows pointing forward. I think that's a simple, smart way to convey movement through your four years of college. During college, you grow and change throughout the four years and arrows express that message. I'd like to see any/all of you try a few different takes on that. I like the sophisticated use of color in #221 as an alternative to some of the more brightly colored designs (it's just interesting to see both ways of using color). In #221, only one color is used, but it the logo still stands out. It's smart, simple, and professional-looking. Thanks!

Yeah, Blue, I understand. When you see what designs/logos a person likes, you start to understand their style. That should help you pattern your logo, absolutely. I just want people to know they can get real creative and off-the-wall with this. It doesn't have to follow strict guidelines. When I look at these logos: 6, 55, 103, 126, 138, 140, 143, 147, 148, 150 I see some similarities, but there's a wide variety of styles there I believe. I like all of those for different reasons, but you can see that it doesn't have to follow some strict rigid formula for me to like it. Some of those I like more than others, but they all caught my eye to some degree.

Fair enough. But if a contest holder lists all the design numbers they like, people are naturally going to follow that idea. Because they know you like that style. Especially if most of the design numbers you list look similar. But, I agree. People should aim at an original design. But the law of averages say there will be a degree of overlap. ~Blue

With #153, I like the abstract feel of it. As I mentioned with #138, it resembles a textbook/pages/notebook, but it's subtle. It's an abstract creative design as opposed to just a picture of a book. I think the designs are headed in the right direction for sure!

No, there's nothing wrong with improving upon an earlier design. What I was saying is not to restrict yourself to that. Don't ALWAYS just look at a four-star rating and just take that EXACT concept. Try a few that improve upon a 4-star logo that you like and also try and take some ideas from it and do your own thing. And do some that are purely yours, just something you thought up. Try a few different approaches. That's all I was saying. Thanks everyone!

Sorry, but you gave one 4 star rating today, and it went to a carbon copy. I'm just saying. And I don't see anything wrong with improving on a design.
