How Artificial Intelligence Has Changed The Way We Design

By Aamina Suleman , Jun 13 2018

The Artificial Intelligence business is up by 70% in 2018 and by 2022 it will become a $3.9 trillion industry, says Gartner. AI is by far the most disruptive technologies! It became an academic discipline in the 1950s and pushed itself into the mainstream corporate and commercial setting by helping humans with planning, knowledge, processing, reasoning, representation, perception, natural language, construction, manipulation and designing.

Defining Artificial Intelligence

On the surface, we’ve categorized a few things as being artificially intelligent and others not. But the task to describe this phenomenon isn’t as simple as saying ‘it is a machine or system that is intelligent.’ Well, a calculator is smarter and faster at mathematics than a human, but is it intelligent?

Computer scientist Nils John Nilsson defines artificial intelligence as an “activity devoted to making machines intelligent, and intelligence is that quality that enables an entity to function appropriately and with foresight in its environment.” According to this, AI covers a multi-dimensional spectrum akin to a human neural system.

AI In Design Market

In Artificial Intelligence for Design Process Improvement (Worcester Polytechnic Institute) David C Brown sheds a light on the ways artificial intelligence has made a difference in the design industry. Although he has written in context with architecture and engineering, we can pick a few points on how Ai has impacted this (design) field.

  • Provide assistance to designers through software systems.
  • Develop the ability of reasoning in designers.
  • Study and analyze how designers work and how the work-flow can improve.
  • Guide designers about how to apply artificial intelligence techniques to solve design problems.

Our focus in the infographic revolves around AI’s contribution to the design industry whether it is in AI logo maker, designing products, the web or customer experience. Let’s take a closer look.

Artificial Intelligence Design

The future of AI is expansive, and solely depends on how much we’re willing to let it intrude our lives and work. Although in movies we’ve witnessed the destructive nature of this technology, it is alright to use it for some tasks that are beyond human capacity in a digital age.

The mass use of AI depends on its advantages and disadvantages. Here are few:

Pros Cons
Precision and accuracy High maintenance cost
Good with laborious tasks Lacks ability to be creative
Detects fraud and anomalies Absence of common sense
Helps in diagnosis and treatment Destructive if in wrong hands
Automatically creates designs Less room for editing and tuning

At the moment, many are still questioning its ability; and some are even afraid of the fact that AI will supersede humans! So here’s our question to you: will you let AI design for you?
