How Graphic Designers Are Like Tony Stark

“Graphic design will save the world right after rock and roll does.” — David Carson

Okay, it’s true that you’re not a superhero like Iron Man, and you won’t save the world with your graphic designs. But graphic designers have a lot in common with Tony Stark, the man behind the iron suit! Tony Stark is a fictional superhero character that is a billionaire, a playboy, the leader of his own company, and sometimes he is Iron Man. However his true passion is designing!

If you watch the movies or read the comics, Tony Stark works long hours at his desk in his lab, pencil in his hand and staring down at his idea sketches until his eyes are blurry. He is constantly working to improve his skills and learn new things, he experiments with his existing designs to improve them, and attempts to find solutions to human problems. I’m sure this is beginning to sound familiar.

Whether it is creating new and multiple uses for his old robots, fixing his suits, sketching new weapon ideas, or reinventing his company’s brand identity, Tony Stark uses design thinking just like a graphic designer.

Graphic designers create designs that improve the world one design at a time and solve issues no one else thinks about. Designers may lack Tony Stark’s Iron Man suit, but they relate to him on a level that few in his own universe would understand.

This inspirational infographic explains that graphic designers and Tony Stark use design thinking to solve problems, and that if you ignore the obvious, both are connected and have a lot more in common than you would think.
